The
entrance to the camp is on Morris Pesin Drive. Go
south on Morris Pesin Drive, you'll past the Liberty Diner and
Liberty Storage and come to a green gated driveway, which
you'll enter. Continue on the gravel road until you see
a building that says Camp Liberty (park on the gravel near the
building).

Camp
Liberty
Since
1974, Camp Liberty has brought together children from all
areas of Jersey City and introduced them to stories and activities
from around the world. Each week during the summer, children
from different neighborhoods with varying ethnic backgrounds
join in a cooperative effort that develops respect for the
traditions of other ethnic groups and a better understanding
of the world's many cultures.
The Educational Arts Team represents a unique approach to
education that uses the arts to motivate children to find
creative applications for their youthful energy and natural
curiosity.
Cited by the Save The Children Foundation and recognized
by the Children's Theatre Association of America for its work
in the arts and education, The Educational Arts Team has developed
a wide variety of educational, cultural and recreational programs
that reach over 20,000 young people each year.
In
a city sorely lacking sufficient recreational space, Camp
Liberty allows children the opportunity to spread their wings
in a litter-free environment, to run barefoot in a field of
summer grass, to plant flowers and grow vegetables, and to
make new friends in a peaceful and positive atmosphere far
from the broken glass, screaming radios and incessant automobile
traffic of city life.
The great challenge of this time and place is to learn to
appreciate one's own cultural heritage while respecting the
traditions of other ethnic groups. Camp Liberty, located within
the shadow of the Statue of Liberty in Liberty State Park,
is the ideal location for such an undertaking.

Programs
& Activities
City & State certified Camp Liberty opens its gates each
summer for 4 two week sessions, Mondays through Fridays from
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for children ages 6 - 12 (children
under six years of age are not allowed). Every session
children are divided into groups according to their age and
are given a wide variety of activities to choose from. Sing-alongs
and swimming are a part of every campers day as well as their
choice of recreational sports, art workshops, cooperative
group games, drama workshops, gardening and much more. During
each session children are encouraged to participate in a collaborative
event such as a play, talent show or art exhibit. Working
together to create everything from scenery and costumes to

Camp Liberty's Teen Mentor Program
A Summer Experience for Teenagers
in Liberty State Park
This
program is for teenagers, ages 13-15. The teens participate
in a wide range of activities both at Camp Liberty as well
as field trips to other locations. There are 4 Teen Mentor
Program sessions that coincide with the four sessions for
the younger children. Fees are the same as those for the younger
children (see Camp Liberty Fees) and there is a two-session
limit. There is no online form for the Teen Mentor Program,
registration forms will be given at the orientation. The teens
are supervised by Educational Arts Team staff.
BENEFITS TO THE TEEN PARTICIPANT: The activities
are geared to give them an opportunity to have fun but to
also learn important skills such as: how to relate to young
children, learn the necessary skills to develop leadership
values, work as a team member and to solve peer problems with
confidence.
HOW TO APPLY: The number of participants is limited to 12
teens per session so apply early. Teens interested in registering
for the program must first meet with their parent(s) or guardian
and an Educational Arts Team Staff person for an orientation
session that explains the program in detail before registering.
Call (201) 432-1912 to set up an appointment.
Teen Mentor Program activities include:
Camp Liberty Mentoring: The teens spend an hour a day
mentoring a child attending the camp. The teen pairs up with
the child and they participate in camp activities together.
The teens are supervised by adult staff as they work together
with children ages 6-8.
Camp Liberty General Activity: The teens spend the
majority of the day as a group doing a wide range of activities
ranging from educational activities such as improving their
communications and team building skills to recreational activities
ranging from art workshops to field sports and swimming.
Off-site Field Trips: The Teens also take numerous
educational and recreational field trips to nearby locations
including museums, special events, community service agencies
and creative art/drama workshops.
