An Overview of Results NJ Standardized Language Arts Test Scores

Theater Infusion Extension Project Preliminary Report for the Jersey City Board of Education December 2008
In 2005 the Jersey City-based Educational Arts Team was one of 14 organizations from throughout the
country to receive a three-year Arts in Education Model Development and
Dissemination Grant from the United States Department of Education to
research the effects of using drama to increase the student test scores of
underachieving low income youth and advance the teaching methods of using
integrated arts. To
accomplish this EAT developed over 40 lesson plans integrating drama with
Language Arts and Social Studies and worked with 550 students in
twenty-eight 4th and 5th grade classes in the Jersey
City Public Schools.
On March 1,
2008 independent evaluators Elaine Walker, Ph. D. and Martin Finkelstein,
Ph. D. both professors from Seton Hall University’s Department of Education Leadership, Management
and Policy released their findings that found
significant academic, pro-cognitive and pro-social improvement for 550 participating students in contrast to a
control group of the same number.
Students who were part of the Theater Arts Infusion Project clearly
out-performed students who were not involved in the project.
The following two reports were generated as part of the project.
